CATEL (Guillaume de). Memoirs on the History of Languedoc, carefully and faithfully compiled from various authors… and from numerous titles and charters. Toulouse, Pierre Bosc, 1633. Folio, fawn calfskin, spine decorated with grotesque motifs, red edges (18th-century binding). First edition, published jointly by the Toulouse booksellers Pierre Bosc and Arnaud Colomiez. Guillaume Catel (1560–1633), magistrate and councillor at the Parliament of Toulouse, is regarded as one of the first historians to provide evidence for the facts he recounts. He is also the first historiographer of Languedoc. A copy from the Guyon de Sardière collection (1759, no. 2014), bearing his handwritten bookplate at the bottom of the title page and the final page. Jean-Baptiste Denis Guyon de Sardière (1674–1759) was one of the greatest French bibliophiles of the 18th century. His library was acquired in its entirety by the Duke of La Vallière. Caps missing, leather wear on the covers, foxing.
