Description
[BIBLE]. History of the Old and New Testaments, illustrated with over four hundred engravings. Antwerp [Amsterdam], Pierre Mortier, 1700. 2 folio volumes, marbled calfskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the famous ‘Mortier Bible’, sought after for its magnificent illustrations produced under the direction of the painter David van der Plas, comprising 2 frontispieces, 5 fold-out maps and 214 plates, each featuring two subjects, etched from drawings by Jan Goeree, Gerard Hoet, Bernard Picart, Philip Tideman and others, plus 3 double-page illustrations.
The final plate shows the marks left by the nails used to repair the copper plate (vol. II, p. 145).
From the libraries of René Choppin (1806–1886), with bookplates, and Paul Lebaudy (1858–1937) at the Château de Rosny-sur-Seine, with a bookplate reading ‘La Solitude’.
