Description
FOURCROY (Antoine-François). Synoptic Tables of Chemistry, to serve as a summary of the lessons taught on this science in the schools of Paris. Paris, Baudouin, Year VIII [1800]. Folio, fawn half-basane, plain spine, longitudinal title label (contemporary binding). First edition of this rare educational work, comprising twelve synoptic tables in in-plano format, presenting the elementary concepts of chemistry, preceded by an explanatory note. The author, together with Lavoisier, was a member of the commission tasked with developing a chemical nomenclature in 1787. An eminent scholar, the chemist and physician Fourcroy (1755–1809), a deputy to the National Convention, played an active role in the development of scientific education by participating in the creation of the National Institute of Sciences and Arts and the future École Polytechnique, where he taught. He was also director of the National Museum of Natural History in 1800–1801 and 1804–1805. ‘A very scarce work, probably due to the fact that the tables were frequently torn out to be stuck on the walls of lecture theatres ’ (Duveen). Here, the bookbinder has helpfully folded all the tables in half and mounted them on tabs, and has rebound the 11 pp. of introductory text to the same format. From the library of the Marquis Jules de Tristan (1776–1861), with a handwritten bookplate and the seal of the Château de Cormes.
