Description
MARTIAL. Epigrammaton libri XIIII. Paris, Simon de Colines, 1528. In-8, ivory vellum, plain, unmarked spine, gilt and chiselled edges (modern binding). First edition of Martial’s Epigrams published by Simon de Colines (who reprinted it four times between 1533 and 1544) based on the Aldine edition of 1517. Printed in italics, it is adorned with the printer’s fine mark, ‘au Temps’, on the title page and with initials on a perforated background at the head of the chapters. A rubricated copy, with vignettes and initials coloured at a later date. Water stains; repairs to a few leaves. An old handwritten bookplate; a modern stamp on the title page.
