Description
VÉGÈCE. Four military treatises, following all previous editions, corrected on the basis of ancient manuscripts, by Godescalco Stewechio. Leiden, Plantin Press, François Ravlenghien, 1592. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, brown calfskin, gilt fillet and foliage medallion in the centre, decorated spine, red edges (Original binding). Second Plantin edition of Vegetius’s major treatise on military art, accompanied by works by Frontinus, Aelianus, Modestus and Polybius, and by the important commentary by the Dutch humanist Gottschalk Stewech, which forms the second part.
It is illustrated with some fifty woodcuts and diagrams depicting fortifications, war machines, weapons and strategic deployments, as well as a large fold-out plate.
Binding heavily restored, endpapers replaced, foxing and water stains.
