A niece of William II, King of Sicily, Rosalie of Palermo is thought to have lived from 1130 to 1160, spending most of her life in seclusion in a cave on Monte Pellegrino, near Palermo. Legend has it that angels brought her a crown of roses. As the patron saint of Palermo, Nice and Naples, Saint Rosalie is traditionally invoked for protection against the plague and earthquakes. In iconography, she is depicted wearing her habit and her crown of roses, with a crucifix and a skull as a reminder of her penance. - Expert: Cabinet Turquin
