Description
Jean Puy (1876-1960). The Port of Cassis Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 46 x 55 cm A certificate from Mr Hervé Labrid can be issued to the buyer on request. A lover of the Breton coast, which he visited from 1899 onwards, Jean Puy also spent a great deal of time in the South of France. His relationship with the South, overshadowed for many years by his Breton tropism, was the subject of an exhibition in 2010 entitled "Jean Puy et la Méditerranée" (Jean Puy and the Mediterranean) at both the Annonciade Museum in Saint-Tropez and the Musée Déchelette in Roanne. From 1906 onwards, the painter travelled regularly to the Mediterranean coast, either on an itinerant or more or less permanent basis: Saint-Tropez, Nice and also Le Lavandou, Cavalière Agay, Cannes, Marseille and Cassis, where a longer stopover was organised in March 1920, culminating in really long stays in the 1930s. Our work fits in perfectly with the pictorial research carried out by the artist in the Midi: rendering of low skies, asymmetrical composition, simplification of forms, brown of the bare canvas left in reserve. Like Marquet, Jean Puy continued his quest for simplicity, even translating the light of the winter morning through the use of a cameo of greys. Broad lines punctuate the painting, giving pride of place to the sea, turquoise but whitened with foam, recalling the heyday of Fauvism.
