Description
SAINT CLEMENT. Two earthenware flower or onion boxes, square and rectangular, decorated in blue and gilded monochrome low fire, with cut sides formed by pilasters decorated with ribbon bows holding foliage and framing landscapes in grisaille alternating with a rare decoration of butterflies and caterpillars. Upper register with friezes and garlands, cut-out belt resting on four feet. Louis XVI period. Minor accidents and restorations, no grille. 14 x 21 x 14 cm and 11.5 x 12 x 12 cm Under the impetus of Richard Mique, Marie-Antoinette's architect, who became the majority shareholder, the factory turned towards a new aesthetic that was in vogue at the time: neoclassicism, of which our earthenware is a perfect illustration. A similar form is preserved in the Musée de Commercy (inv.MC_0430). Bibliography: Les faïences de Strasbourg et Niderviller, Massin, 2005, a model of the same shape is reproduced on p.113.
