Description
BABOULENE and MULLER, late 19th century French school Reunion of two caricature paintings. Signed. Damage and missing parts. 202 x 95 cm. 208 x 63 cm. Our two paintings refer to Jules Méline, who was born on 20 May 1838 in Remiremont (Vosges) and died on 21 December 1925 in Paris (Seine). Méline was a French politician who served as a minister several times and was President of the Council from 1896 to 1898. An advocate of agriculture, in 1892 he introduced protectionist measures for agricultural products (the Méline tariff). His sceptre ending in a beetroot, the mention of the Sugar department and the representation of foreign sugar producers illustrate this movement to close borders. He was also behind the Mérite Agricole award created in 1883, which is caricatured as "Méline agricole" in the second painting.
