‘All-wood chair – Type II’ – a design created in [1942], which won an award at the 1947 Meubles de France competition and was exhibited at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, Paris, in 1948
Chair.
The frame (front legs, tenoned crossbar, side rails, rear legs extending into the backrest uprights) is made of oak.
The seat and backrest are made of thermoformed plywood.
Produced by the Ateliers Jean Prouvé; manufactured by Établissements Vauconsant in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port (near Nancy).
Height: 80.5 cm – Length: 40 cm – Depth: 46.5 cm
Shows signs of wear; a chip missing from the right-hand backrest upright; chips and veneer loss at the front and all around the seat; damage and a section missing from the front right-hand side of the seat.
Public collections:
Mobilier National – A set of six ‘Tout bois – Type II’ chairs is held by this institution under the artificial identification number EHM 13.
Related works:
A set of ‘Tout bois – Type II’ chairs was installed in the staff lounge at the Berger Lerault Printing Works in Nancy around 1942 and at the Centre for Nuclear Studies of the French Atomic Energy Commission in Saclay.
