Emmanuel de La Villéon was a French Post-Impressionist painter and illustrator born in Fougères. He studied at the renowned Académie Julian. A landscape painter who worked from life, his vibrant palette was influenced by his more famous contemporaries, such as Monet, Cézanne and Van Gogh. The first president of the association ‘Les amis du musée Emmanuel-de-la-Villéon’ describes him as the ‘painter of harmony, quiet joy, balance and rural serenity, where even hardships are smoothed away by the slow rhythm of the seasons’.
