Description
Marius-Jean-Antonin MERCIE ( 1845-1916 ) "GLORIA VICTIS Proof in bronze with a double patina of gold and silver. Sand casting. Titled on the terrace "Gloria Victis". Signed "A.Mercié" on the base. Bears the circular stamp "ACHILLE COLLAS REDUCTION MECANIQUE" and the founder's mark "BARBEDIENNE, Fondeur, PARIS". Antonin Mercié's "Gloria Victis" ("Glory to the Conquered") won him a medal of honour at the 1874 Salon. The original work was commissioned by the City of Paris after the artist purchased the plaster cast at the 1873 Salon, which he produced at the Villa Medici in 1871. The group depicts the winged, armoured Renommée supporting a dead and defeated soldier, as indicated by his broken sword. She personifies France, defeated but heroic after the traumatic Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Cast in bronze by Thiébaut Frères, the statue was placed in Square Montholon in Paris before being conserved in the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris. The subject was a huge success because of its patriotic symbolism. Replicas can be found in museums in Copenhagen, Berlin, Lima and Washington. In Bordeaux: in 1883, the Bordeaux city council asked for permission to build a replica of the statue. It justified its decision the following year by saying that it "wished to perpetuate the memory in the hearts of the people of Bordeaux; the fact that no Frenchman should forget the memory of National Defence, to which our city devoted itself entirely". It was inaugurated on 19 January 1886, but on 19 June of the same year, the "Anarchists of the Throne and the Altar" tried to destroy it with dynamite, in vain. Cast in bronze by Thiébaut et fils, it was erected on what is now Place Jean-Moulin. Height 93 cm
