Description
Schall after and Descourtis engraver "Paul et Virginie à l'ile Maurice, Inspired by the novel of bernardin de Saint Pierre". Suite of 6 polychrome engravings, Dim: 43 x 52cm (accidents and stains) Bernardin de Saint-Pierre also drew his inspiration from a news item. The shipwreck, one of the most important scenes in the story, was in fact directly inspired by a shipwreck that occurred in 1744: that of the ship Saint-Géran, in which two lovers disappeared: a Creole woman, Mme Cailloux, and Mr Longchamps de Montendre, a ship's ensign.
