Carriage alarm watch, known as an ‘onion’ watch, with a domed silver case, openworked and chiselled with a decoration of foliage, chimeras, birds, a reserve dial decorated with a village scene, and a double silver dial: one with Roman numerals highlighted in black and interspersed with lozenges, featuring a single (damaged) hand; the other with a central movable disc for the alarm, displaying Arabic numerals. Hairspring escapement, chain fusee, Egyptian pillars, chiselled cock. Mechanical movement with manual winding via key, striking mechanism on a bell. Two winding mechanisms (one for the alarm, one for the chain to power the movement) signed Louys Prevost. Date: late 17th century. Diameter: 49 mm. Thickness: 34 mm. Silver protective case in the ‘forme’ style, re-perforated with stylised floral decoration (Diam.: 59 mm). Total gross weight: 228.8 g Louys or Louis Prévost was active in Saumur, France, in the mid-17th century.
