Description
Attributed to Auguste JEAN (1817–1887). A large bowl with raised rim on a circular base, made of smoked glass, decorated with two twisted handles applied whilst hot. Polychrome enamelled decoration, enhanced with gold, featuring botehs, flowers, branches and leafy scrolls. Original oval ‘Maison Veuve Catelin’ label. J. Mongars Sr, porcelain and crystal, 1 & 3 Place Verdrel, Rouen. H: 13.3, W: 35.5, D: 35 cm. Auguste Jean worked at the Clichy crystal works from the 1870s onwards. He is renowned for his objects with revolutionary forms and Japanese-inspired decorations. He ceased working in the 1880s, yet his work enjoyed a significant posthumous reputation, establishing him as one of the great pioneering glassmakers of Art Nouveau’s formal innovations.
