Description
Gilded bronze CLOCK, depicting the young Greek ephebe Hippolytus carrying a quiver and bow, accompanied by his greyhound; his helmet rests on a boundary stone atop a lion’s skin. A fresco in the lower section depicts the death of Hippolytus. Empire period, 53 x 39 x 12.5 cm.
The pendulum weight needs reattaching; the movement needs servicing.
[This refers to Jean Racine’s play *Phèdre*.
Our clock draws on the iconography of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin’s painting *Phèdre and Hippolytus* (c. 1802), held in the Louvre Museum.
Hippolytus dies, trampled by his own horses, which have been panicked by a sea monster emerging from the waves.]
