Description
Joseph GAZAN (1891–1985), The Clown’s Dream. Bronze cast with a patina in shades of gold and green, with head and hands in marble. Signed on the base, H: 53.5 cm. One hand needs reattaching, one hand is missing, one hand is incomplete and needs reattaching; some strings are missing from the mandolin. History: a very similar model was produced jointly by Demeter Chiparus and Joseph Gazan, featuring a different guitar, open eyes, and occasionally made of ivory rather than marble. Bibliography: Bryan Catley, *Art Deco and other figures*, Antique Collectors Club, England, 1978; a variant of our model is referenced and reproduced on p. 79.
