Storms and shipwrecks are subjects for which the painter was renowned. These subjects were so popular that it seems likely that our painting was executed in the artist’s studio, under his supervision, to meet high demand. The practice of copying was carried out by pupils, both for training purposes and for commercial reasons, to satisfy art lovers.
