Description
OSTERLIND Anders (1887–1960), The Village of Limetz (South and West), 1949, oil on paper, signed, titled, countersigned and dated on the reverse, 60 x 73 cm.
He was the son of the Swedish painter Allan Österlind and the father of the watercolourist Nanic Österlind. Although in his youth he was exposed to the Impressionist movement through Armand Guillaumin and the ageing Auguste Renoir, whom he assisted in his work, and although he rubbed shoulders, at the height of their fame, the Fauves and forged bonds of friendship and mutual respect with some of the most influential artists of the École de Paris, such as Amedeo Modigliani, Michel Kikoine, Chaïm Soutine, Othon Friesz, Jacques Villon and André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Anders Österlind displayed from a very early age an independent spirit, an acute sensitivity to the grand forces of nature, and a commitment to pictorial mastery that would lead him, for half a century and indifferent to passing fashions, to pursue a body of work as an original landscape painter imbued with intense poetry.
His works are held in numerous museums in France and abroad.
