Size. 70 x 49 cm at sight This work refers to a painting by the artist entitled 'Possession' from 1974. Leonor Fini, pseudonym of Eleonore Fini, born in Buenos Aires on 30 August 1907 and died in Aubervilliers on 18 January 1966, was a French surrealist painter, engraver, lithographer, theatre designer and writer of Italian origin. In 1931, Leonor left her family and moved to Paris, where the following year she had her first solo exhibition at the Galerie Bonjean, run by Christian Dior. She became friends with Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Pieyre de Mandiargues, Georges Bataille, Max Jacob, Paul Eluard and Max Ernst, although she never joined the Surrealist group. A passionate lover of literature and poetry, Leonor illustrated over fifty works, including the works of Charles Baudelaire, whom she deeply admired, as well as those of Paul Verlaine, Gérard de Nerval and Edgar Allan Poe. At the same time, she continued to create sets and costumes for opera and theatre. Considered one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, but also one of the most misunderstood, Leonor Fini has been the subject of a passionate reappraisal in recent years. "Scandalous", yes, as André Breton described this diva who refused to be labelled surrealist. For Valentine Vacca, "Leonor Fini's one and only interest was the theatricality of life, which she considered inevitable and for this reason orchestrated in the course of her continuous spectacularisation of the self"[3]. "As a mutant, she played with genders, from feminine to masculine, from female to feline, from human to vegetable. So many distinctive marks that have given rise to the adjective finian"[39]. Leonor Fini is to be found in many private collections, and major retrospective exhibitions have been devoted to her work in major museums in Belgium, Italy, Japan, the United States, Austria, Germany and elsewhere.
