Joan Miró, born in Barcelona on 20 April 1893 and died in Palma de Mallorca on 25 December 1983, was a Spanish painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramist, considered a major figure in modern art.
Defining himself above all as an "international Catalan", he was one of the leading exponents of the Surrealist movement. His work reflects his attraction to the subconscious, to the "childlike spirit" and to his country. In his early work, he showed strong Fauvist, Cubist and Expressionist influences, before evolving into flat painting with a certain naive side.
He produced numerous illustrations, lithographs and monumental sculptures for the Maeght Foundation.
Women, male-female relationships and eroticism were a major source of inspiration for the master. Their representations abound in Miró's work, both in his paintings and in his sculptures. However, he did not focus simply on the canonical description of bodies, but tried to represent them from the inside.
