Description
CUZCO school; Peru, early 18th century, the Archangel Ariel, oil on canvas, titled and signed lower left, restorations, size: 56.5x44 cm + modern frame: 81x67.5 cm. Dressed like Carlos II's guards, the archangel is depicted with wings, a wide-brimmed feathered hat, a red and gold costume, an arquebus in his hands and a sword at his feet. Similar archangels from the same period can be seen in the Hall of Angels and Archangels at the Pedro de Osma Museum in Lima. Provenance: private collection, Lausanne, acquired in the 1990s in Buenos Aires.
