Giambattista PIRANESI (1720-1778) Part of a vast magnificent port for the use of the Romans 1751. Etching and burin, caption in Italian, dimensions at sight: 48x59,5 cm + frame: 81,5x110 cm . Proof on strong laid paper, fine condition, number 344. Italian archaeologist, architect and classical artist, famous for his engravings of Rome, Italy, and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons". Translation of caption: Part of a great and magnificent Seaport of the ancient Romans, according to a project. The interior of the great Piazza del Mercato is adorned with rostral columns marking the naval victories of the ancient Romans. The two large towers served as lanterns, which were lit to ensure the safety of sailors. The statues, inscriptions and all the ornaments of this port are taken from the remains of ancient monuments scattered throughout the Roman countryside and beyond.
