(Reformation - Protestantism) German school, 16th-17th century Full-length portrait of Melanchton (Philipp Schwarzerd, 1497-1560) Wash 42 x 35 cm Melanchthon (Philipp Schwarzerd, 1497-1560) was a German humanist and theologian who worked closely with Martin Luther. Nicknamed the 'tutor of Germany', he played a major role in the Protestant Reformation. He wrote the Augsburg Confession (1530), the foundation of Lutheranism, and made a major contribution to the reform of Protestant education and theology in the 16th century.
