Description
School of François Clouet, 16th century. PORTRAIT OF PHILIBERTE DE SAVOIE (1498-1524), DUCHESS OF NEMOURS. As this portrait shows, the drawings by François Clouet and his pupils/collaborators are distinguished by their finesse and expressiveness from all the other portraits of this type produced at the time, which are often quite mediocre. Black pencil and red chalk Text in pen and brown ink on verso Bears the number '182' and old labels on the mount on the reverse, an old label numbered '197' on the frame (Small tears and lacks around the edges, small stains and a small hole) Provenance : -Eugène Rodrigues Collection, Paris, his stamp (L.897) lower left; -Its sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Me Lair-Dubreuil, 28-29 November 1928, no. 44 (Presented as a work by François Clouet); -Henri de Peyerimhoff de Fontenelle Collection; -Then by descent ; -Private collection. Philiberte of Savoy (1498-1524), Duchess of Nemours, was born of the second marriage of Philippe II of Savoy and Claudine de Brosse, and was the half-sister of Louise of Savoy. In February 1515, in Turin, she married Julien de Médicis, who widowed her the following March. This probably explains the absence of the widow's garb from our portrait, even though the permanent wearing of a mourning dress after the death of a husband was not yet compulsory. The Duchess did not remarry and died in 1524. On her death, the King disposed of the Duchy in favour of her mother, Louise of Savoy, before giving it to her younger brother, Philippe. We would like to thank Alexandra Zvereva, who made it possible for us to write this entry. [XD]
