Description
Pieter AERTSEN (Amsterdam 1508 - 1575), attributed to Portrait of a man with the van Meerbeeck coat of arms (Mechelen, Brussels) Oak panel, three boards, reinforced Monogrammed lower left: AP Inscription on the base of the column: SI SERO SERIO 1555 Inscribed top left: AETA 39 97 x 69 cm The model for our painting could be Jacobus van Meerbeeck (1526-1896), a famous figure in the Duchy of Brabant. He was a meier at Haacht and Drossaert. The Latin expression si sero serio can be translated as: "Better late than never, but seriously". Our portrait brings us closer to the art of Pieter Aertsen. Originally from Amsterdam, he spent most of his career in Antwerp. Aertsen's body of work consists mainly of large market scenes and religious compositions set in domestic or popular environments. Portraiture, strictly speaking, is not the main genre of his work - but the human figure plays an essential role. The few rare portraits given to him allow us to advance our attribution: in the Portrait of Simon Marten Dircsz in the National Gallery in Athens, the figure is treated in the same way as our portrait, taken from three-quarter view, occupying almost the entire composition, with particular attention paid to the face and hands (see J. Bruyn, "Een portrait van Pieter Aertsen...", Oud Holland, 1999, 113, no. 3, reproduced). We would like to thank Philippe Palasi for his help with this file. [RM]
