Description
Claude - François VIGNON (Paris 1633 - 1703)
The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence
On its original canvas
64.5 x 49 cm
Son of the painter Claude Vignon, Claude - François Vignon was admitted to the Académie Royale de peinture in 1683. He worked at the Château de Versailles, notably for the Queen's antechamber.
He was influenced by his father and painters such as Le Brun and Le Sueur, using the scheme of a crowd of figures in the foreground, dominated by a central figure on a podium in the background. From his father, he also took the foreshortened oval of the main character's face, softening it.
In 1668, he painted Saint Bartholomew Delivering the Daughter of the King of Armenia from the Devil, a May of Notre Dame, now lost and known from an engraving by Jean-François Cars. In this painting, apart from the famous shortening of the oval face, we can see the same pose of the central figure as in our Saint Laurent.
A note by Sylvain Kerspern will be given to the buyer.
