Ducos, Antoon van Dyck, Catalogue raisonné des tableaux du musée du Louvre, Paris, 2023, reproduced fig. 11-4, p. 135). The favourite daughter of King Philip II of Spain, Isabella received the governance of the Netherlands on the occasion of her marriage to Archduke Albert of Austria in 1695. Through her mother, she was the granddaughter of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis, and for a time she was considered for the French throne. She was also the Catholic pretender to the throne of England. When her husband died in 1621, she took the habit of the Poor Clares, a female branch of the Franciscans. [RM]
