Description
18th century school, follower of RIGAUD
Portrait of Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (Paris 1721-1794)
Canvas
144 x 111.5 cm
Formerly attributed to Martin van Meytens (Stockholm, 1695 - Vienna, 1770)
The best-known portrait of Guillaume de Lamoignon is the version by Hyacinthe Rigaud, of which our painting faithfully reproduces the composition, with modifications to the wig and certain details of the clothing. In 1716, Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), the greatest official portrait painter of the end of the reign of Louis XIV and the beginning of the Regency, painted the portrait of Guillaume II de Lamoignon, seigneur de Blancmesnil et de Malesherbes (1683-1772).
This influential magistrate, then aged 33, was avocat général at the Parlement de Paris.
