Description
Cesare MUSSINI follower of, circa 1870 Malek-Adhel saving Mathilda Canvas 47 x 37 cm Malek-Adhel saving Mathilda (or Mathilde) is a scene from Sophie Cottin's historical and sentimental novel Mathilde ou Mémoires tirés de l'histoire des croisades (1805). This early 19th-century bestseller tells the story of the impossible and tragic love between Mathilde (sister of Richard the Lionheart, a Christian) and Malek-Adhel (brother of Saladin, a Saracen prince who converted to Christianity for love) during the Third Crusade. On several occasions in the novel, Malek-Adhel saves Matilda from danger (kidnappings by Bedouins, battles, threats), protecting her virtue and her life at the risk of his own.
