Caserta Castle, the Bourbons of the Two Sicilies and the Murats
The Palazzo Reale in Caserta was built in 1752 for Charles of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies. This gigantic Baroque palace, the work of Luigi Vanvitelli, became the symbol of the power of the Bourbon dynasty of Naples.
In 1806, Napoleonic troops ousted the Bourbons. Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law, and his wife Caroline Bonaparte moved into the château in 1808. They furnished a luxurious Empire flat. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, the Bourbons returned to the throne and reoccupied Caserta until 1860.
Today, the palace bears witness to this alternation between the Bourbon dynasty and the Napoleonic interlude.
