Description
Mme Mélanie BOST (Paris, ? active 1837-1852) Anatole France at the age of 4 Miniature medallion in a gilded brass frame Height 5 cm A pupil of Aubry, she exhibited at the Salon from 1837 to 1852. Anatole France (1844-1924), whose real name was François-Anatole Thibault, was famous for his elegant irony, smiling scepticism and classical prose. His major works include Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard (1881), Thaïs (1890), L'Île des Pingouins (1908) and Les Dieux ont soif (1912). Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921, he embodied the fine spirit of the Belle Époque, while at the same time standing up for justice (the Dreyfus affair). A humanist and Voltairean, he remains a master of philosophical humour.
