Description
Kingdom of Egypt, 1st half of the 20th century Very rare silver egg of King Farouk I of Egypt On a four-legged base, this egg is decorated with garlands of flowers and the name of King Farouk, and topped with the royal crown of Egypt. A similar egg, from the collections of King Farouk I, is preserved and exhibited in the collections of the Abdine Palace in Cairo. (see illustration A) H. 17.7 cm, diam. 8.5 cm Weight: 494.5 gr. Marks and hallmarks : AUCOC L. for Aucoc Louis and foreign title. Excellent condition Provenance: descendants of the imperial Ottoman and royal Egyptian families. Louis Aucoc came from a famous family of Parisian silversmiths at the beginning of the 20th century. There are several known works combining the hallmark of Louis Aucoc or his brother, André Aucoc, with the name or monogram of King Farouk I, as illustrated by this egg, but also pill boxes (see Sotheby's London, 15 July 2021, lot 43 and 7 June 2017, lot 210). These objects and boxes were usually commissioned from the renowned jeweller based in Cairo and Egypt, Ahmed Naguib Bei, who frequently made commissions for the Egyptian royal family from objects he had in stock.
