Description
Jacques-Augustin Gandais, circa 1834 LEGUMIER FOR THE FIRST GOLDEN SERVICE ORDERED BY LOUIS-PHILIPPE I, AS KING OF THE FRENCH (1830-1848). Engraved on the outside with the initials of the sovereign, LP under a royal crown. (See sale on 12 March 2020, Paris, salle Rossini, Dufestel & Mallié-Arcelin, lots 17 to 22). Silver-lined metal With its removable lining. Diameter: 31.8 cm This little-known set of silverware, used in the various residences of the last French king, including the Château d'Eu, bears witness to the new monarch's hesitations in asserting himself as sovereign, as well as to the heraldic choices made at the beginning of his reign, which were not to last, through the engraving of the figure of Louis-Philippe I under a crown on the reverse of each piece. King Louis-Philippe's coat of arms replaced his monogram on the silverware, which now adorns porcelain services and books. Provenance : -Louis-Philippe I (1773-1850), King of the French -His daughter, Clémentine d'Orléans (1817-1907), Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha -then by descent. Jacques-Augustin Gandais founded his goldsmith's workshop in Paris in 1819, specialising in the production of doubled or silver-plated metal. He brought this technique, which had originated in England, to such a high level of excellence and innovation in France that he became its leading figure. The quality of the goldsmith's services he produced made silver-plated metal famous in France. Gandais used strips of pure silver to cover the copper on the protruding parts of his models to prevent wear, just as he used solid silver for the feet and other ornaments on his pieces. In 1834, Louis-Philippe I awarded him the title of goldsmith and king's plater, and made him a knight of the Légion d'honneur. In 1834 and 1844, the jury of the Exhibition of Industrial Products awarded him a silver medal, and the Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale awarded him a silver and gold medal. Installed in the galleries of the Palais-Royal, Gandais also delivered his production to other European courts, such as that of Queen Maria II da Gloria of Portugal. [XD]
