French school, circa 1779-1780. Equestrian portrait of the Duc d'Orléans, in the uniform of Colonel-General of the Hussars. Louis-Philippe Joseph d'Orléans (1747-1793), known as "Philippe Egalité", father of King Louis-Philippe, was appointed Colonel-General of the Light Troops (Hussars) by King Louis XVI on 22 April 1779.
