Drawing made from life on tracing paper by Franz Kruger, almost certainly in preparation for the engraving made from Kruger's drawing in 1831 when Louis d'Orléans, Duke of Nemours and second son of the King of the French, Louis-Philippe I, was elected King of the Belgians. (See illustration A: engraving based on a drawing by Franz Kruger showing the Duc de Nemours with the Palais Royal in Brussels in the background on the left, evoking his election as the first King of the Belgians in 1831).
On 3 February 1831, the Belgian Congress voted to elect Louis d'Orléans (1814-1896), Duke of Nemours and second son of the last King of the French, Louis-Philippe I. This vote caused concern in the United Kingdom. This vote worried England, which feared that Belgium would become a satellite of France and a threat to it. France, in the person of King Louis-Philippe, therefore declined the proposal of the Congress to avoid a diplomatic incident that would isolate it on the European stage. The Congress then decided to elect a candidate suggested by England, the German Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg (1790-1865), who became King Leopold I of Belgium. In recognition of France's assistance to the Belgians against the Dutch in 1831, Leopold I of Belgium married the sister of the Duc de Nemours, Princess Louise d'Orléans (1812-1850). The Duc de Nemours served in the French army with his brothers and took part in the conquest of Algeria. He also played a diplomatic role at European courts. He married Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, a German princess and niece of Leopold of Belgium.
Franz Krüger (1797-1857) was a Prussian painter who specialised in paintings of horses and military scenes, as well as portraits of Berlin's high society. His portraits of Prince Augustus of Prussia (a son of Augustus Ferdinand of Prussia) and Count August Neidhardt von Gneisenau established his reputation as a portraitist. A royal professor and full member of the Academy, Krüger made numerous trips in the following decades: in 1836, 1845, 1847 and 1850-51 to the Tsar's court in St Petersburg, and in 1839-1840 to the court of Hanover. He met Eugène Delacroix in 1846 during a stay in Paris. In 1855 he took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
