Etienne Pottier, 18th century LOUISE-HENRIETTE DE BOURBON-CONTI (1726-1759), DUCHESS OF ORLEANS -from the collections of the Dukes of Orléans at the Palais-Royal and then of King Louis-Philippe at the Château d'Eu. Depicted with her mid-body slightly turned to the right, with her face to the front, and dressed in a winter outfit known as "en frileuse", with a yellow cape trimmed with fur. Our painting is the first and only original version, signed by Etienne Pottier and painted on wood, of the portrait of Louise-Henriette de Bourbon-Conti, Duchess of Orléans and paternal grandmother of the future King of the French, Louis-Philippe Ist. Of the other known versions of this portrait, given or attributed to Étienne Pottier, including the one in the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Orléans (see illustration A), the painting we are presenting today is the one with the most complete iconographic composition, the only one in which the background of the portrait is embellished, on the left, with a column and, on the right, with a hanging that opens onto a cloudy sky in the centre. Oil on wood 27 x 20 cm Moulded and gilded rocaille style frame. Signed on the left: Et.e Pottier pinxit Bears the inventory number of King Louis-Philippe's collections at the Château d'Eu: 356 4°, painted in the lower right corner of the portrait (see illustrations B1,2 &3 taken from Jean Vatout, Le château d'Eu, notices historiques, 1836, tome 5, pp. 130-131, where our painting is described as follows: 356 quater / En frileuse, on wood, painted by Et. Pottier). Marks on the back of the panel: LPD under crown for Louis-Philippe d'Orléans duc d'Orléans which is the oldest mark, then LPO under crown for Louis-Philippe duc d'Orléans (1814-1830), future king of the French under the name of Louis-Philippe I. And EU under closed royal crown, which is the mark of the collections of the Château d'Eu during the reign of Louis-Philippe I (1830-1848). There is also an inventory number: 275bis. An inscription identifies the sitter and the author of this portrait: Louise-Henriette de Bourbon-Conty, Duchesse d'Orléans, born 20 June 1726, died 9 February 1759. By Et.e Pottier. There is also a label in the top left corner with an inscription in ink: gd salon right-hand side of the large portrait of the Duc de Chartres by Delorme n°1 from top. Provenance : Collection of the Dukes of Orléans at the Palais-Royal in Paris until 1826 under inventory no. 227 quater, our portrait of the Duchess of Orléans is described there as follows: En frileuse, Painted by Etienne Pottier, height. 11 inches, width: 8 inches, P.R. for Palais-Royal (see illustrations C1,2 & 3 taken from Jean Vatout, Notices historiques sur les tableaux de la galerie de S.A.R. Mgr. le Duc d'Orléans, 1826, tome 3, pp. 280-281), then the collection of King Louis-Philippe I at the Château d'Eu under no. 356 4° until 1848, in the grand salon on the ground floor belonging to Madame la Duchesse d'Orléans, née princesse Héléne de Mecklembourg-Schwerin, on the right-hand side of the door opening onto the corridor (see illustration D1, DR ADMN). Then: collection of the Duc de Nemours, son of King Louis-Philippe, and through descent to his grandson, Prince Emmanuel d'Orléans Duc de Vendôme, at Belmont House in England until 1927. [XD]
