Description
Charles GOMIEN (1808-1876)
Princess Marie de Ligne
Oil on canvas.
120 x 95 cm
Signed lower left and dated 1850.
In a Regency style frame in moulded wood, gilded and stuccoed.
Marie de Ligne (1843-1898) is painted here at the age of 7, seated and holding an open book, wearing a white dress with a pink sash. She was the daughter of Princess Lubomirska and Prince Eugène de Ligne, Belgian ambassador to Paris under Louis-Philippe. Marie de Ligne married the Duc de Doudeauville Bisaccia (a branch of the La Rochefoucauld family). The couple had several children and descendants.
Our painting was commissioned by the Princes de Ligne in 1850, and left their collection when their daughter Marie married the Duc de Doudeauville, or when their estate was divided.
Provenance :
Collection of the Princes de Ligne and then the Duc de Doudeauville (La Rochefoucauld).
Charles Gomien (1808-1876) was a French painter and portraitist. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1828, introduced by the painter Charles Nicolas Lafond. He was a pupil of Louis Hersent and Paul Delaroche. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1831 to 1875 and at the Palais des Beaux-arts in 1855, and enjoyed great success as a portraitist of the most illustrious French families under King Louis-Philippe and then Napoleon III.
