Description
(COSTA RICA) Guanacaste pendant representing a stylised shaman in translucent emerald green jade
Costa Rica Atlantic slope culture, Period IV, ca 1-500 AD
H: 15.7 cm L: 4.5 cm W: 1 cm
The piece is primarily a pendant. It is engraved and sculpted. The upper part features an anthropomorphic figure: a shaman in transformation. His hands are resting on his stomach, his mouth open. At the top are two heads of the same animal, probably a jaguar. This type of pendant was probably worn by shamans or caciques. A very fine example in beautifully translucent emerald jade.
