JAPAN – Edo period (1603–1868). A fragment of an emaki depicting two figures observing gaki (the damned) being tormented by three oni (demons). Ink and gouache on paper, margins gilded with gold leaf. Late 19th century. Slight losses to the paint layer and creases. Dimensions of the image: 31 x 48 cm. In a frame with a gilded moulding. Dimensions including frame: 34.2 x 50.5 cm. Note: to be linked to the subject of the ‘Scroll of the Hungry Ghosts’ held at the Tokyo National Museum.
