Description
PAPUA - New Guinea A votive shield made of carved wood and pigments, decorated with two facing anthropomorphic figures. Early 20th century. 63 x 20 cm. Slight damage to the upper section. Provenance: Private collection, Paris. Notes: Votive boards from the Gulf of Papua, known as ‘gope’ by the Urama and Wapo peoples, were sacred objects embodying ancestral lineages and clans, and which temporarily housed the spirit beings depicted (Welsh, Webb and Harara, *Coaxing the Spirits to Dance: Art and Society in the Papuan Gulf of New Guinea*, 2006, p. 42).
