JAPAN A statuette of the goddess Kannon, the Buddhist deity of compassion, carved from stuccoed wood and lightly enhanced with polychrome paint. The serene face, with half-closed eyes, is crowned by a tall, stylised, draped headdress and a pectoral ornament. Edo period, late 18th to early 19th century. H: 21.5 cm. Signs of wear and some damage.
