Description
17th-century Flanders – Circle of Jan Van Kessel the Elder (1626–1679) The Concert of Birds. Oil on copper, bearing an inscription ‘Ven Kecel’ in ink on the reverse. Slight losses to the paint layer in the lower section. 16.5 x 12.5 cm. Notes: A grandson of Jan Brueghel the Elder, Van Kessel became Master of the Antwerp Guild in 1645. He devoted himself primarily to painting small works, with insects and birds as his favourite subjects. A comparable work was sold on 20 June 2018 at Christie’s Paris (lot 14 – sold for 93,750 euros).
