Description
A large stone sculpture of the Virgin and Child, with a significant amount of the original polychromy still intact.
Standing, her head adorned with a floral wreath, the Virgin holds the Child seated on her left arm; she has a gentle face with almond-shaped eyes, prominent cheekbones and a mouth forming a slight smile; she is dressed in a gown and a veil forming a cloak, revealing the wavy hair that frames her face; her gown is cinched at the top by a belt carved with small flowers.
The Child, dressed in a long tunic, was probably intended to be holding a piece of fruit or a bird in one hand and grasping his mother’s cloak with the other.
The child’s head needs to be reattached; the hands are missing.
13th–14th century.
Dimensions: 104 x 40 x 33 cm
