BRUSSELS XVII
A rare tapestry depicting the Coronation of Constantine, who is shown wearing a laurel wreath, surrounded by a rich border featuring flower pots, Brussels.
Marked ‘BB’ for Brussels Brabant and workshop mark ‘M. R. L.’ for Matthys Roelants (1602–1663) and Joris Leemans (1602–1663)
Wool and silk, very good condition, standard restoration and some areas of fragility, small beige braid added into which the original marks ‘BB’ and ‘MRL’ have been inserted.

Lined, cleaned and fitted with hooks for hanging.
It forms part of a series of tapestries depicting the life of Constantine, based on cartoons by the Brussels painter Lanceloot Lefebure, executed between 1638 and 1648.
A similar example is held at the Geneva Museum of Art and History.
