Mesoamerica. Tlaloque idol, a Mixtec geometric anthropomorphic figurine, a protective talisman. Jadeite or a similar light green hardstone, engraved, polished, with an antique patina. Height approx. 5.3 cm. On the back, fine, converging conical perforations for suspension. With closed eyes surrounded by an engraved circle and hands crossed over the stomach, this figurine is associated with Tlaloc, the god of rain, and represents an adaptation of a very ancient cult dating back to the anthropomorphised Olmec jade axe (Duverger, Gendron). Provenance: public auction in France, formerly from a private collection. Oaxaca. Mixtec culture. Post-Classical period (1400–1500 AD).
