Description
Asian Art. Ancient China. Bi disc flanked by two phoenixes, a ritual jade object symbolising the Way of Heaven. Calcified nephrite jade, or similar. ‘Chicken bone’ appearance and partially translucent. Diameter approx. 9.5 cm. Length approx. 13 cm. The disc has a hollow centre, a primordial symbolic form of the Bi revered since the earliest days of the Middle Kingdom. Finely chiselled relief decoration on both sides depicting sprouting grains, symbols of rebirth. The phoenixes are symbols of immortality. Provenance: public auction, formerly from a private French collection. Certificate of authenticity enclosed, issued by the Scialom Gallery in Paris dated 16 October 1998, identifying the jade disc as dating from the Han dynasty. Object presented here in the Han style. Possible antiquity, not guaranteed.
