Description
Egypt. Head of Pharaoh Akhenaten wearing the royal nemes, his forehead adorned with the uraeus. Sandstone (natural siliceous hard stone). Height approx. 12 cm excluding the plinth. Displayed on a wooden plinth. Despite the damage, the stone reveals – in addition to the false beard and the uraeus – the remnants of Akhenaten’s distinctive features: an elongated face with almond-shaped eyes, a long, straight nose, and a mouth with full, drooping lips. The damage evokes ‘damnatio memoriae’, the condemnation to oblivion of the heretical pharaoh who worshipped the Disk and his descendants. Provenance: public auction in France. Style of the 18th Dynasty, Amarna period. Possibly ancient; authenticity not guaranteed. As is (missing parts, chips, wear and tear)
