René OLIVIER (1874–1962) – “Market Scene in the North”, oil on canvas, signed and dated “1912” in the lower right-hand corner 73 cm x 54 cm. René Olivier was born in Elbeuf into a family of textile manufacturers. He was a pupil of Berthe Mouchel and was admitted to the Artistes Français in 1900. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1904 and was noticed for his work by another Norman painter, Lebourg. He took advantage of the vibrant artistic scene in Rouen and Paris (he attended the Académie Julian) in the early 20th century. He also travelled throughout the northern regions.
