Giampietrino’s ‘Madonna with the Apple’ enjoyed considerable success; we know of nine autograph versions, each featuring variations in the landscape, the Child’s pose or the Virgin’s veil. We can compare our painting with the ‘Virgin and Child’ held at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan (see the catalogue of the Museo d’Arte Antica del Castello Sforzesco, Volume 1, Milan, 1997, no. 207, reprinted on p. 307); the size of the panel (53 x 40 cm) is comparable to our own
